Students are Hungry Every Week, Not Just Thanksgiving Week

With Guests: Anne Ciareldi, UMass Lowell & Dr. Shelley Errington Nicholson, Mount Wachusett Community College

According to Hunger on Campus, 50 percent of community college students and 47 percent of four-year college students reported food insecurity. College campuses have become key service points for students who are food, housing and fuel insecure and the needs are only growing due to the pandemic and other societal challenges. Best practice in serving these students, and creating sustainable programs was the focus of this Thanksgiving week episode of “Office Hours with Dr. De Veau”.

My guests, Anne Ciareldi, UMass Lowell & Dr. Shelley Errington Nicholson, Mount Wachusett Community College were outstanding, incredibly knowledgeable and were truth tellers as they spoke of the challenges and the origins of these programs on their respective campuses. And, a gold star for “perseverance” goes to Dr. Nicholson for navigating her way back to her home to get a solid wifi connection.

Be aware that due to the Thanksgiving holiday we will not be publishing a newsletter until Thursday, December 2, however, we will be releasing two Fireside pods as replays to all “What’s Up in the Academy?” subscribers. The episode “What’s Newsworthy?” with USA Today’s Chris Quintana will hit your in-box on Monday, November 29.
