January Think Tank Episode

Michigan President Fired, USDOE Wants Campuses to Rethink Financial Holds on Transcripts & The Future of the 4 Day Work Week on Campus

Office Hours is back weekly with great topics and guests! Thank you to the January Think Tank, returning panelists Dr. Gage Paine (Gage Paine Consulting), Shelia Higgs Burkhalter (Winthrop University) and first time panelist, Dr. Jason Pina (New York University). With so much happening in the New Year, we had a lot to discuss!

University of Michigan Board of Regents has ousted the University President due to a reported sexual affair with a subordinate staff member. In the minutes before the original show aired, it was also announced that Michigan would be paying out $490 million to sexual assault victims of a former Univ. Michigan doctor. The Panel agreed that this is a big moment for the University to take bold leadership action and hire someone who can change the campus culture and those responsible to creating it.

In other news, U.S. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona, has called on campuses to cease the process of holding transcripts for students who owe money. Citing that this practice creates inequitable outcomes. The panel discussed how campus leaders can make strides in making needed policy moves in order to intentionally address inequities.

And finally, the panel LOVES a 4 day work week. But is higher education ready for it?
