During the summer months I have this overwhelming need to find some sort of balance between renewal and productivity. I’m very public in stating that I’m not someone who is good at relaxing, and at 57 years of age, I am still seeking to find an ‘on’ switch for my relaxation mode, and I am frustrated that it is so damn hard to achieve. As such, this summer I am attempting something new, namely being more spontaneous with my life. If I cannot be relaxed, perhaps what I need to be is less structured.
Spontaneous people didn’t exist in my family. They were considered flippant or unserious. But it doesn’t mean they weren’t cherished in some way. Typically referred to as “a real character” by my father or a “creative talent” by my mother, these individuals were not us.
