My daughter is gearing up to go to college, and I can't help but feel a mix of pride in her and frustration. Pride in how much potential she has, and frustration because her options are more closed off than mine were in 1985.
In 1985, at 18 years old, we packed the family station wagon and I left for college. After considering campuses in the Northeast, down South and in the Midwest, I headed to Boston. We were 12 years post Roe v. Wade, contraception was legal for unmarried women in Massachusetts for 13. Women had a choice, and when given a choice, they were going to college.
