On September 18, 2024 the Supporting Higher Education in Refugee Resettlement (SHERR) Program will host a free webinar: “Campus Engagement with Refugees: Why and How?” One of the panelists is past “Office Hours with Dr. De Veau” guest, Laura Wagner, Director of Refugee Student Initiatives at Presidents' Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration.
In February of 2023, Dr. Wagner and Erin FitzGerald, Director of the Center for Global Education & Fellowships at Salve Regina (RI). Joined me for a discussion about how to welcome refugees on campus and the, then, newly announced “Welcome Corps” program. The conversation was excellent, and I invite you to listen .
According to the invitation for the webinar, the purpose of the event is: “As a follow-up from the (joint) letter from Secretaries of State and Education in June 2024, calling upon higher education leaders to engage in refugee resettlement, the webinar will provide an overview of the benefits to campuses of engaging with refugee resettlement and the types of engagement pathways available to institutions. Attendees will gain a better understanding of how involvement with refugees advances the mission of higher education institutions while providing urgent support and opportunities for refugees – both students and non-students.”
As US HigherEd seeks to identify the role it may take in helping to address the challenges associated with the global refugee crisis, this webinar can help campus leaders in taking a first step. I encourage you to forward the invitation to other members of your network.
