Last week, MIT let the world know that their admissions numbers went in a troubling direction. Their incoming Class of 2028 - the first admitted after the Supreme Court's ruling on affirmative action - is significantly less diverse than previous years. We're talking a drop from about 25% to just 16% of students identifying as Black, Hispanic, and/or Native American and Pacific Islander.
MIT is attributing the dip in diversity to the SCOTUS decision, and will be formulating new admission initiatives moving forward, including seeking feedback from faculty. I can't help but wonder if this presents an opportunity to fundamentally rethink our approach to enrollment management and the wave of "holistic" admissions practices.
