Each Thursday, I take a moment to take out my pen and some of the dozens of blank cards that I have acquired over time to write a note … or five. The notes are then mailed through U.S. Postal Service and make their way through some sort of miracle to their destination. Mail is pretty cool that way, and while there is not the immediacy of a text or even an email, finding a card or letter in your mailbox from a friend is one of the last remaining simple joys in our hectic lives.
The act of writing a note is more than giving gratitude, it is also a time to remind people what they mean to you, what makes you think of them, and how they are an indelible part of your life. No need to overthink it - just a note. A note to send greetings, a joke or a sincere token of care will generally be well received by the recipient.
This weekly habit has provided me with some grounding, an opportunity to practice my handwriting and fight the age-and-tech-related worsening, and something to actually look forward to.
Dip into your stack of blank cards and get some stamps. It’s a simple act and one that will lighten your emotional load. I promise.
