Happy New Year! If you are anything like me, you have a pile of January reading to get accomplished, and with that I have accumulated some quick references of what made news in the fall of 2024, and what we may want to ready ourselves for in anticipation of the spring semester.
Enrollment Decline: Despite previous gains, this fall we saw a 5% drop in first-year enrollment, particularly among traditional 18-year-old students. Retention efforts will need to respond in manners that are both strategic as well as data informed. Considering that there are unknowns related to international student recruitment, the best course of action is going to be to recruit well and retain even better. Financially, if I was seeking to advocate for additionally staffing, I would go with learning specialists, social workers and retention staff as well as a clearly defined CARE model that would emphasize resource referrals.
