As I reflect on the challenges and opportunities facing higher education today, I often find myself drawn to a simple yet profound concept: empathy. Recently, I came across a compelling video by Scott Monty, where he eloquently discusses the return on investment (ROI) of empathy. His insights resonated deeply, and I couldn't help but conclude: I have come to believe even more strongly is that showing up is a superpower... one that we all possess, if we just want to unlock it?
In higher education, empathy is not just a feel-good virtue; it's a powerful tool for creating a supportive, inclusive, and successful academic community. Despite external challenges that seek to undermine our ability to care for our communities—challenges often fueled by figures like Trump and Elon Musk, who have expressed disdain for public education and social equity—we must remain steadfast in our commitment to empathy. By leading with empathy, we can unlock a multitude of benefits that enhance the experiences of students, staff, and stakeholders alike.
