Something of interest has arisen, people want to connect. And not in the usual LinkedIn semi-faceless manner, rather, folks need to connect in person. Zoom is no longer the preferred manner of communication for anything other than strictly transactional interactions. Whether it be due to a need for connection, fear of the current undulating news cycle or simply a case of screen fatigue - face to face is where it’s at.
How this will impact hybrid schedules for #HigherEd pros will bear out in time. But, I have already made it clear to my students that office hours in person are only on specific days, and those times are … FULL. While I may be one person and one set of experiences, I am hearing that colleagues are finding student interaction being heightened. Perhaps it’s time to change what we are doing on our remote days; making those days opportunities for thoughtful reflection and productivity, and our in-person days for the people/personal work? Perhaps.
As I sign-off for the week, I am thinking about how to make time for face time and why it has become so essential in people’s lives.
The Friday Sign-Off is a quick reflection on the week that has passed, from my seat - wherever that may be.
Folks have a greater need…desire to meet IRL. I hope it’s a significant change, and simply highlights the importance of a true human connection.
I believe you are correct that people crave more personal interactions. Could be COVID, could be the technology used now, I don't know. i know the students I deal with want to talk face to face instead of through Zoom.
