The Magic of a Closing Campus
One of my favorite times of year, regardless of which campus I've worked on, has always been the closing period before Thanksgiving and December breaks. It's not just because the students are leaving (though that's certainly part of it), but because of the unique atmosphere that settles over the campus.
During these times, a relaxed pace envelops the offices. Music drifts through the halls, casual attire becomes the norm, and conversations shift to food, family, and upcoming festivities. I've always volunteered to stay until after the official closing, partly to avoid traffic, but mostly to savor the solitary feel of an emptying campus. There's something magical about the quiet that descends.
The Privilege of Solitude
Walking around a college campus when the halls have closed and classes are on break is a special experience. It offers a rare opportunity to soak in the essence of the place – to truly appreciate it as a great and good space. I firmly believe that spaces are more than just physical structures; they have the power to inspire. Great spaces afford those who walk among them the chance to see promise, possibility, and purpose.
If you have the opportunity to explore your campus during this closing time, I encourage you to do so. Take it all in, envision yourself as part of this environment, and reflect on how your presence contributes to making the campus a great and good space for the entire community.
Happy Thanksgiving, and may you find moments of quiet reflection in the spaces that inspire you.
