College campuses are known as a welcoming place for discourse, protest, demonstrations and miles and miles of signed petitions. The management of campus protests typically has fallen within a combination of functional offices including student affairs, the president’s office, the public relations office, and campus police. There is no one playbook that fits every scenario. Although some have attempted to write them, they can fall short and don’t meet the needs of each campus and their unique challenges. The reality is that campus protest is rooted in the campus culture, the politics of the day both on and off campus, and the desire to be heard.
