A couple months back I had the wonderful opportunity to interview Dr. Karen Whitney and Dr. Pat Sanaghan for my podcast, “Office Hours with Dr. De Veau”. The interview was about the value of utilizing interim executive leaders during times of transition. I highly recommend listening to the interview, it was great, but something that Dr. Whitney said during the interview that continues to bang around in my head relates to “setting the table.” She used “setting the table” when illustrating how interim leaders can set the table for the permanent leader to have a more successful transition to leading the institution. Imagine, if you will, finding yourself at a table covered in chaos, nothing looks appetizing. When you set the table, the meal looks delicious, rather than thrown together.
