Students at Iona University, discusses the growing trend of lay leadership in Catholic higher education. He explores the challenges and opportunities non-religious leaders face in maintaining Catholic traditions while managing modern educational complexities. Joel emphasizes the importance of understanding and embracing the institution's Catholic heritage, mission, and specific order's traditions. He also highlights the unique governance structure in Catholic institutions, including oversight from local bishops and global religious orders. As leadership transitions from religious to lay people, Joel stresses the need for strategies to preserve the Catholic mission and serve underserved populations, as exemplified by Iona University's founding principles.

Recorded on 12/13/24
<p class="button-wrapper" data-attrs="{"url":"https://linktr.ee/deveautrain","text":"Be a Guest! The response was phenomenal, and I thoroughly enjoyed featuring both longtime colleagues and newer connections from my network.

These episodes centered on candid conversations about the future of the student affairs profession. What made them special was their organic nature and the minimal preparation required. My guests came ready to share their insights, and I was there to listen and engage. It was a perfect setup!

Now, I'm excited to announce that I'm recruiting potential guests for mini-episodes slated for spring 2025. Here's what you need to know:

All you need is a computer with a camera and microphone

You're welcome to bring a plus-one if you'd like

As a thank you, guests receive a 6-month free full paid subscription to this Substack

Current paid subscribers will have their subscription extended by 6 months post-expiration

If you're passionate about student affairs and have thoughts to share, I'd love to hear from you. Following Dr. Claudine Gay’s resignation from her short term as President at Harvard University, we came to find out that she had received ongoing threats to her safety including death threats. On January 8, 2024, Lincoln University’s Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Antoinette "Bonnie" Candia-Bailey, took her life after seeking assistance from her employer. Lincoln University is an HBCU, and was Dr. Candia-Bailey alma mater - a place that should have been safe, but it wasn’t. The attacks on Dr. Gay and Dr. Candia-Bailey is further evidence of what Black Women in the Academy are well aware of. The world of Academia is not a safe one for black women.

This episode of “Office Hours with Dr. De Veau” features two experts on this topic, women with both research and lived experiences who can point to specific issues and calls to action as it relates to toxicity and bullying on campus and how it is impacting minoritized communities in the academy. but it appears that GenZ white men are feeling left out in this political landscape, fueling their interest in supporting former President Trump.

These polls and news coverage made me think back to the great conversation I had last year with author, Mark Greene whose expertise is “our dominance-based culture of masculinity.” These data points are disconcerting as we consider how our campuses thrive as community, when there is such an intense gender divide around politics, can our students actually find belonging or will they fester in isolation? This is a great episode and absolutely timely for this moment on our latest Poller-coaster ride.

Listen Now

Fortify Features

Dr. Laura De Veau is Principal & Founder of Fortify Associates, LLC. Fortify Associates, LLC is unique in the higher education, not-for-profit, and public service market. Well, it seemed like just the right time to replay this season finale episode that dropped just a few weeks ago. It’s Dr. Parnell’s first week on the job, and this episode is a great listen (if I do say so myself). A perfect time to catch up with NASPA’s new President!

It was my pleasure to speak with Dr. Amelia Parnell, the newly appointed President of NASPA. We discussed her transition to the role that will begin July 1, 2024. It was an honor to get to know Amelia and her motivation to become the next NASPA President. Amelia is a data head and hard-wired optimist - And we spend time speaking about both! (Data and optimism) … but we also discussed the challenges that the profession is facing. She shares personal anecdotes that shaped her leadership philosophy, including her first job experiences and the lessons learned from them about complex systems, quality control, and the importance of every role in an organization

Listen Now

In this episode, Amelia expresses a strong commitment to innovation and community within NASPA. She emphasizes the importance of maintaining and enhancing NASPA’s role as a vibrant community of professionals dedicated to advancing the field of student affairs. Looking ahead, Amelia acknowledges the challenges facing the field of student affairs but remains optimistic about the opportunities for growth and innovation. She highlights the importance of balancing joy and challenge in her work, aiming to foster an environment where both can thrive

Amelia values deep, meaningful engagement and is committed to building strong relationships within the NASPA community and beyond.
